Emma Behl | Connection & Redemption
Emma works among people from refugee communities, which influences her art. She works with canvas and paint, but other times she works with natural materials, such as tree branches and dried plants. Emma is most often inspired by creation and finds that co-creating with her Creator is her most joyous way of working. Art is one of the richest ways Emma enjoys connecting with people of different cultures, teaching young women how to paint and how to express their stories of hardship, beauty and redemption.

Art is asking questions
I have always asked questions that challenge the status quo, which is often the job of the artist. Many of my paintings start with painful questions that I have for Jesus.
Art is conversation & letting go
Like a conversation with Him, my work is rational, as lines, colors and positioning of the subject come onto the canvas. Somehow, everything must be neat and understood.
Similar to my questions about hardship, there is a phase in the process when it’s time to “let go” in the artwork. This is a time of worship, freedom and forgetting the rules.
Art is surrender
There are answers to my questions but often, those answers only come with surrendering. With the use of scribbles and freedom to color outside the lines, this means I must give myself permission to be a child again.
